It makes use of the direct animation technique. Through painting on clear 16mm film leader and etching into film stock emulsion I created moving images without a camera. This kind of animation process has at its heart a deep engagement with materials, restrictions and chance – and is in fact as old as the medium of film itself.
I did the film for the ON8MIL Cameraless Film Competition in 2020. There are plenty of stunning and exquisitely executed works that make my film feel like a little test. I was really blown away watching them. You can do so as well over at on8mil.space, the films will be available as part of their online gallery very soon. Or head over to their Vimeo profile vimeo.com/on8mil. My deepest respect for all the artists who contributed. 2020 was in fact not so bad, at least in terms of creativity I think.
Please note that this is the 16:9 version. The original version for the competition was 4:3 including the sprockets. But somehow I like this framing better.
