»Weskus« is a music video I created for one of my own tracks released on echolot. It's based on footage captured along the South African west coast on black-and-white 8 mm. For more information please scroll down.
I created this music video for one of my own songs that was released in late July 2024 as part of the "Weskus EP" on my label echolot.
The whole EP is heavily inspired by a time I spent traveling along the South African west coast in February 2024. I filmed in different locations of the journey with my old 8 mm camera on black-and-white film stock. And what I got back from the lab were these beautiful images that immediately take you into another world.
The challenge was to make the images work with the pace and character of the song which is a hybrid of the South African styles Amapiano and Gqom with a bit of my own trademark House sound mixed in. The editing was the crucial and fun part as I followed quite an experimental approach: I started editing from the beginning to the end and when I finished I copied and inversed the whole sequence and layered it with the original one. I only used parts of the inversed sequence to create the impression of randomness. I then remembered I had this painted 16 mm film leader material from a project from some years ago on my hard drive and I tried to blend it with the black-and-white sequence. The last thing I added was a selection of punched paper I had wildly arranged on my flatbed scanner, before.
Filmed on location in South Africa in February 2024.
